User Question: I am a main applicant with 4 dependents—my wife and 3 kids (ages 9, 4, and 3). I got my and my wife’s EAD and SSN approved. How can I get SSNs for my children? Do I need to apply for their individual EADs on the USCIS website to get SSNs?

Expert

Expert Answer: Children can only receive Social Security numbers (SSNs) if they have **work authorization** or another immigration status that allows it. Since minors typically do not qualify for an EAD, they won’t automatically receive an SSN. However, if your children adjust status later (e.g., receive asylum or another immigration benefit), they can apply for SSNs at that time. If you need ITINs for tax purposes, you can apply for them through the IRS.
