User Question: I came legally and applied for asylum in 2017. On September 12, 2024, I filed a Mandamus lawsuit, and after five months, I received an interview notice in New York City at the Department of Homeland Security office on West Hudson St in Manhattan. My question is: why is my interview at the Department of Homeland Security office instead of the USCIS office in Long Island? I am really worried. Please help me, and thanks in advance.

Expert Answer: It is not uncommon for asylum interviews to be scheduled at a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) building, as USCIS operates under DHS. Some USCIS offices are located within DHS buildings, especially in major cities like New York. Your interview is still being conducted by USCIS asylum officers, not ICE or other enforcement agencies. If your notice specifies an asylum interview, you should proceed as planned. If you have concerns, you can call USCIS or check with your attorney to confirm the location and reason for the assignment.
