User Question: When can I apply for an SSN? Do I also need to wait 150 days? I applied for asylum in November 2024 and did my biometrics, but my status hasn’t changed to confirm that I did my biometrics.

Expert Answer: You can apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) **after receiving your Employment Authorization Document (EAD)**. Unlike the work permit application, there is no specific 150-day waiting period for the SSN itself, but you must first obtain an approved EAD (Category C08 for asylum applicants) before applying.

### Steps to Apply for an SSN:
1. **Wait for Your EAD Approval** – You must have an approved and valid EAD card.
2. **Visit the Social Security Office** – Once you receive your EAD, you can apply for an SSN at your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office.
3. **Required Documents**:
- Your **EAD card**
- Valid **passport or another form of ID**
- **I-94 Arrival/Departure Record** (if applicable)
- **USCIS asylum receipt notice (Form I-797)** (sometimes requested, but not always needed)
4. **Processing Time** – After applying, you should receive your SSN card by mail within **2–4 weeks**.

### Biometrics Status Issue:
It is normal for your online case status **not** to update after biometrics. USCIS does not always reflect biometrics updates online, but if you completed your appointment, it has been processed.

If you are eligible, you can now apply for your EAD (if 150 days have passed since filing your asylum application).
