User Question: Hi, I came to the USA in 2023. I got an ITIN number and have been working with that number. I applied for asylum and got my SSN in December 2024. I want to know if I should do my taxes with my ITIN and next year with my SSN. Thank you.

Expert Answer: If you have received your SSN, you should notify the IRS and update your records to reflect your SSN instead of your ITIN. When filing your taxes, use your SSN and inform the IRS that you previously filed under an ITIN. You can do this by attaching a letter to your tax return or contacting the IRS directly. Once you obtain an SSN, your ITIN is no longer valid for tax purposes.
