User Question: My son is on my pending application which he was in my home country. He now lives here in the USA with me. How can I go about getting a Social Security for him as he is five years old?

Expert Answer: If your son is included in your pending asylum application and is now in the U.S., he may be eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) once he obtains an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Generally, asylum applicants must first apply for and receive their work permit (EAD) before they can request an SSN.

For a child under 18, you may also explore options for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) if needed for tax purposes. It’s advisable to check with the Social Security Administration (SSA) or consult an immigration attorney for further guidance on your specific case.
