User Question: I applied for asylum 150 days ago. I am gonna apply for a work permit and SSN now. So my question is how long is it supposed to take to receive an SSN and work permit? Thanks.

Expert Answer: Once you apply for your work permit (EAD) after the 150-day mark, the processing time can vary. Generally, it takes anywhere from 1 to 6 months to receive the EAD, depending on USCIS processing times. If you requested an SSN when filing your EAD application, you should receive your SSN card automatically a few weeks after your EAD is approved. However, if you do not receive it, you may need to visit a Social Security office to apply in person.
