User Question: My EAD has been approved, and I received my SSN, but I have not yet received my EAD card. When can I expect to receive my EAD card? Also, my new employer wants to give me a joining bonus for relocating to another state. Can I use my SSN to get paid, or do I need to wait for my EAD card?

Expert Answer: Once your EAD is approved, the card is typically mailed within 7-10 business days, but delays can occur. You can track your case status on the USCIS website. As for payment, while having an SSN is necessary for tax and payroll purposes, you must also present your EAD card to your employer as proof of work authorization before starting employment. Receiving a signing bonus without first completing the I-9 verification process with your EAD could create legal issues. It’s best to wait until you have the physical EAD card before receiving any employment-related payments.
